What's your line?
Do you see your life as linear?
Are you one of those folks whose life looks like a consistent upward trajectory?
If your life looks like this, then this post isn’t for you.
For most of our lives, we’re told this is the way. The path is such that we can eventually retire with our gold watch as a loyal servant and spend the twilight of our lives traveling and catching up on missed opportunities.
What. The. Actual. HECK.
Who wants to live like that?
But, it’s been engrained in us since we were young, and most people believe it’s the only way to get ahead…or even make sense of it all.
It’s our default path to success.
And for many of us, we think about the above line with envy, because ours looks like:
It’s chaotic and full of twists, turns and now whats.
But, what if there’s meaning within the mess?
What if for those of us feeling scribbly, we are actually searching for something instead of reaching?
I started to realize that this line is less random when you look to the center.
Instead of looking up, try looking in.
When I started writing here, I realized how much I love writing. And it gave me the opportunity to think about my life through the lens of writing.
So for right now, writing is at my center.
The world feels a bit more calm.
And in doing so, I can look to the moments when I’ve flown past the center towards other opportunities with more meaning.
My life no longer looks like failures in fields like teaching, technology, marketing, wine and golf.
Instead, hovering in these places helped me gain perspective on what I’m supposed to be doing with my time on this planet.
When you plot it out that way things start to look a bit more orbital. I like that.
With, writing at the center, I’m no longer worried about where I’m going.
Write. Publish. Repeat.
The rest will start taking care of itself (so I hope).
A Quote from Mastery by Robert Greene
“Be relentless in your pursuit of expansion. Whenever you feel like you are settling into some circle, force yourself to shake things up and look for new challenges.”
Mastery, Robert Greene (p. 71)
