Barclay marathons was one of the sparks that got me interested in ultras ( besides goggins first book, ironically ). Something about the absolute brutalism and nonchalant attitude is so appealing to me.

Gary Cantrell, aka "Laz" Lake, is an absolute character. I love the moment in the film when he is driving and does the bit about the gas gauge.

"E means Excellent, F means you're Fucked"

That's the Barkley in a nutshell.

> And somehow, his second book is BETTER.

Your note on the goggins book. I had the exact opposite thoughts! I almost didn’t finish it, tbh. It was so lackluster and uninspiring to me compared to his first one. It was nothing new, imo. Crazy we have such polar opposite views! There were some crazy new bumps in his road, but idk. It did absolutely nothing for me this time. I even got the extended audiobook with a few extra hours of ‘podcast’ styled chat.

That's the best part about this stuff is having different opinions. It would be pretty boring if we were all the same.

Oddly enough, I also did the audiobook. My big takeaway is that the books serve different audiences with similar lessons, not unlike stuff by Ryan Holiday.

The first book is targeted at people who are desperate for change. They want to get better but have no idea where to begin. These folks are in the shit.

The second book is aimed at people who have achieved success but might feel stagnant, it shows you how to relight that fire. These folks have been in the shit but have gotten comfortable.

But I understand, I think the lessons are also more subtle in the second book. There aren't those great stories from hell week and BOAT CREW TWO! It's more of a battle within.
